One last look at the long-vacant Howard Johnson’s property in Dewitt

After years of hurdles, the Town of Dewitt has announced that the former Howard Johnson’s hotel located on Carrier Circle will be demolished this week. Built in 1961, it quickly became an unsalvageable eyesore since closing in 2003.

Here is one last look at the property through the eyes of some local urbex photographers.

In 1967, my father, John Lyons, was transferred to Syracuse by his employer, Howard Johnson. The company was in expansion mode back then, and my dad was responsible for locating sites to build HoJo hotels and restaurants, including the Ground Round establishments. While we waited to move into our new home, HoJo put us up at the Carrier Circle location for a week – my parents, 5 kids, and one on the way (oh, and a parakeet, too)! I have great memories of eating ice cream and hanging by that pool. So sad to see yet another American icon fade into oblivion.

    • Thanks so much for sharing. I wasn’t able to see it in its glory so the stories are nice to hear.
