Mizpah Hotel still missing its spires 32 years later

Did you know? On August 30th 1984, lightning struck the ornate gothic bell tower of the Mizpah Hotel and First Baptist Church at 215 East Jefferson Street. The result of the bolt left two 12-foot cracks and damaged one of the spires. Subsequently, all four spires were removed. The president of the construction firm working on the tower stated, “We decided to remove the other spires but we plan to also find a replacement for them in two to three weeks, when we will be ready to put something up top. We just hope someone will have a plan for a design by then.”
