How Court Street got its name

In 1991, local author Jack Carpenter stated that Court Street was named when a surveyor ventured to the north side of what was then the village of Syracuse to lay out the track for a new road. Carpenter wrote that as the the sun rose that morning, the surveyor was blinded by a bright flash from the reflection of the sunlight on the spire of the county court house, which at that time was located on Onondaga Hill. The surveyor noted that the glint stood directly in line with the new street he was laying out. Because of this, the surveyor settled on the name Court Street.
