Old signatures found in the basement of 125 West Fayette Street

I was recently contacted by local artist, Ben Krzykowski, of Resurrected Tattoo to take a look at some writing he had seen on the basement wall of their shop at 125 West Fayette Street. Pictured above is some of that writing, a marking made by Ben W. Stone on January 29th, 1930.  Research tells us that Ben W. Stone was a Syracuse resident, aged 18 or 19 when he wrote this. He was born in 1911 and served in World War II as a staff sergeant for the Army’s Signal Corps.

Ben graduated from Rutgers University and worked for the Onondaga Savings Bank for 43 years, retiring as treasurer in 1973. He also volunteered his time to work with several organizations including the YMCA and Literacy Volunteers. When he passed away in 1993 he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery with his wife, Helen.
