Pictured is 205-207 Glenwood Avenue, former home of Anastasios and Aspasia Constas. Born in 1886, Anastasios was a native of Greece who had moved to Syracuse when he was a teenager. He owned an ice cream store on South State Street for many years before moving operations to Valley Drive where he was known as “Uncle Harry” and served ice cream for over 30 years to Southside residents. His wife Aspasia was born in 1900, also in Greece. She had moved to America at the age of 24. Aspasia once told a local writer that she left her native country as her parents, “were not in very good financial circumstances as it is with many European families” adding that, “they send us out to make our fortunes in a foreign land.” In 1951, her brother George who had previously immigrated from Greece to Hawaii, came to Syracuse to visit. It was the first time the two had seen each other in 50 years. George said he never visited because, “he had been busy with a restaurant business and rearing and educating his three sons.” Once he retired, he wanted to see his sister.
